The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) is a very important figurehead in promoting environmental responsibility in the packaging industry. Understanding APCO’s function and following their steps is very important to a Melbourne based packaging supplier such as Wattle.Successful implementation of the APCO framework allows us to achieve customer expectations and match with national sustainability goals.
The APCO is a nonprofit organization and was established in 1999. It specialises in administering the Australian Packaging Covenant to companies across Australia. The Australian Packaging Covenant is a co-regulatory framework under the National Environment Protection Measure 2011 (NEPM). The framework describes how businesses and governments share accountability for controlling the environmental effects of packaging which is why it is important to be spread.
The mission APCO wants to achieve is to improve recycling procedures and methods nationwide as well as encourage sustainable design. Lessening packaging waste by working with industry stakeholders is also a big goal of APCO.
Being a member of APCO requires us to commit to certain obligations, and if these obligations are not met our membership is at risk of being terminated. These obligations include:
These responsibilities guarantee that members of APCO take an active role in lessening packaging’s negative environmental effects. This is the reason why it is so important to us here at Wattle that we are a member of this movement.
These SPGS include:
By following the SPGs, Wattle is able to create packaging solutions that align with circular economy principles.
Wattle Aligning with APCO’s guidelines allows us to show that not only are we following regulatory requirements but that we are committed to environmental protection and working towards innovation in packaging solutions that allows for a more sustainable future. Being a member means that Wattle’s commitment to sustainability satisfies the growing customer need for ethical packaging while also advancing national environmental goals as a whole.
Goals such as designing packaging that meets recyclability and compostability standards within the packaging industry as well as utilizing materials with higher recycled content can be highlighted through our membership.
